V Vasanthi Devi, a distinguished educationist and former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tamil Nadu, passed away at 87 following a cardiac arrest. She felt unwell at home in Madurai and succumbed on her way to the hospital. She leaves behind a daughter and a son.

During her career, Devi served as the second Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and was the chairperson of the State Commission for Women in Tamil Nadu. An ardent human rights activist, she also ran against former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the 2016 Assembly election.

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed his condolences, saying, 'I am deeply saddened by the demise of senior educationist Professor Vasanthi Devi.' DMK leader and MP Kanimozhi also extended condolences, acknowledging her significant roles, including as a member of the Tamil Nadu Planning Commission.
