The Tamil Nadu government is on tenterhooks as the Kalaignar University Bill waits for President Droupadi Murmu's decision. The bill, aimed at creating a new university in Kumbakonam, has been reserved for presidential consideration by Governor R N Ravi, according to a Secretariat source.
This legislative initiative proposes the bifurcation of Bharathidasan University to form Kalaignar University, serving students from four key districts. The university honors former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, with incumbent Chief Minister M K Stalin poised to be its first Vice Chancellor upon approval.
The delay, however, has thrown timelines into disarray. Originally anticipated to start in the 2025-26 academic year, the new educational establishment's opening is now uncertain, pending the President's assent. Another bill regarding the Tamil Nadu Sports University is also awaiting approval, emphasizing the administrative challenges facing the state's education sector.
