In West Bengal, a significant step is underway as a selection committee led by former Chief Justice of India, UU Lalit, is conducting interviews for vice-chancellor posts in 15 state-run universities.
For over two years, these universities have been operating without permanent heads, caught in a dispute between the Raj Bhavan and the Education Department. The committee, formed by the Supreme Court, aims to resolve this standoff.
Interviews began Tuesday at a Kolkata hotel, with around 13 academics interviewed so far. Notable candidates include former acting VC of Calcutta University, Asutosh Ghosh, and North Bengal University's former VC, Om Prakash Mishra. The process continues until Thursday, as the governor remains the chancellor of these institutions.
