In Tamil Nadu, uncertainty over this year's NEET exam, prompted by allegations of irregularities, is leading students to shift their focus toward engineering courses. This trend is evident as engineering enrolments have surpassed 2.5 lakh in the state.
The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA), managed by Anna University, offers a completely online, single-window counselling process for students seeking admission to undergraduate B.E. and B.Tech courses. This system relies solely on Class 12 marks and bypasses the need for an entrance exam.
According to sources from the Directorate of Technical Education (DOTE), online registration commenced on May 3. An official revealed that within just 26 days, over 2.5 lakh applications were received, with expectations of reaching three lakh soon.
Despite the delay in medical admissions due to NEET issues, officials assured that the engineering admission schedule remains unaffected, with enrolment closing on June 2. Random numbers and merit lists are to be released on June 5 and June 29, respectively. These dates await approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Tamil Nadu boasts around 2.5 lakh engineering seats across more than 400 colleges affiliated with Anna University, highlighting the substantial capacity for aspiring engineers in the state.
