Supreme Court Advocates for 'Thug Life' Screening Amid Language Controversy

In an important decision, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government on Thursday to act decisively against those obstructing the release of the Kamal Haasan starrer, 'Thug Life,' across the state. This move comes amidst a backdrop of hurt sentiments and protests sparked by Haasan's remarks about the Kannada language.

The court's bench expressed concern over rising intolerance and the ease with which sentiments get offended in India, questioning the legitimacy of halting artistic expressions such as movies and stand-up comedy. Highlighting the need for the rule of law, the court underscored the necessity for films with a CBFC certificate to be screened without interference.

Despite the uproar from groups demanding an apology from Haasan, the court insisted on adherence to lawful processes instead of succumbing to mob pressure and threats. It granted assurances of security for the film's screening, stressing on prompt legal action against any attempts to coerce or prevent its release.
