The ancient Odeon of Herod Atticus in Athens, located at the foot of the Acropolis, remains a significant cultural landmark. Revered by artists and integral to Athens' cultural scene, the venue recently opened its 70th season for the Athens Epidaurus Festival, which is an annual event cherished by Greeks.
This year marks a poignant chapter as the odeon prepares for a lengthy closure, estimated to last three years, to undergo necessary maintenance and restoration. Such work highlights the venue's historical significance and its importance to the festival, according to Katerina Evangelatos, the artistic director since 2019.
The closure will require festival organizers to explore new venues to maintain the festival's continuity. With the Greek National Opera performing with spatial adaptations, the odeon's grandeur and revered status remain evident, as echoed by Giorgos Koumendakis, its artistic director. Meanwhile, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni emphasizes the uncertainty surrounding the reopening.
