In an exclusive interview, seasoned actor and filmmaker Rahul Bose opened up about the challenges surrounding improvisation in the filmmaking process. During the conversation, Bose shared a behind-the-scenes moment when an actor's unscripted improvisation sent shockwaves through a film set, highlighting his firm opposition to improvisation that disrupts the narrative.
Reflecting on his career spanning over 55 films, Bose detailed an incident involving one of India's premier actors who veered off script, causing panic on set. "I arrived on set only to find an actor taking the scene in an unexpected direction," Bose recounted. Despite the actors' spontaneity, the director's concern led to the unscripted scene being cut from the final edit.
Bose stressed that while his theatre background nurtures improvisation, it should be restricted to rehearsals, not filming. "Once 'action' is called, the plan should already be clear," he asserted. Bose elaborated on his discomfort with on-set improvisation, empathizing the high costs and risks involved, contrasting his methodical style with the flexible approach of directors like those behind 'Gangs of Wasseypur'.
