The controversy surrounding Prada's new footwear collection has sparked concerns in Karnataka. The luxury brand faced criticism for featuring chappals resembling the traditional Kolhapuri footwear, priced at an astonishing Rs 1.2 lakh per pair. State Minister Priyank Kharge has been vocal about recognizing Karnataka's artisans who have been crafting these iconic chappals for generations.

Kharge pointed out that many of these skilled artisans hail from regions like Athani, Nippani, and Chikkodi. While Prada claims its design was inspired by Indian handcrafted footwear, Kharge argues that merely acknowledging this connection isn't enough. He urged for a greater emphasis on the artisans' names, work, and legacy, advocating for cultural entrepreneurship and global market access.

Kharge also recalled efforts during his tenure as Social Welfare Minister, where Karnataka secured joint GI tag rights with Maharashtra. He emphasized that this was to preserve shared heritage, not state rivalry. The goal, he stressed, is to ensure these artisans gain the credit, exposure, and financial growth their craft deserves.
