In a significant move, the Maharashtra government tabled a bill on Monday to establish the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority. The new body is set to manage and oversee the mega congregation scheduled for October 31 next year.
The bill, introduced on the first day of the monsoon session, seeks to provide a dedicated Authority to organize the Kumbh Mela in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, alongside related activities in surrounding areas. This development follows an ordinance approved by the Devendra Fadnavis cabinet in June.
The 22-member Authority will be spearheaded by the Nashik division commissioner, with the Nashik collector and Nashik Range inspector general of police serving as vice-chairpersons. A committee of ministers will periodically review the Authority's work, ensuring smooth operations for the event, expected to draw several crore pilgrims.
