The sacred Amarnath Yatra officially kicked off on Thursday, with eager pilgrims embarking on their spiritual journey from the twin base camps located at Baltal and Nunwan in Kashmir. This annual pilgrimage leads to the 3,880-meter-high cave shrine, renowned for its naturally formed ice-lingam, a revered symbol in Hinduism.
Departure of the pilgrims occurred at first light, traversing two distinct paths: the 48-kilometer traditional route from Nunwan-Pahalgam and the shorter 14-kilometer path from Baltal. The start was marked by a fervent atmosphere as chants of 'bum bum bole' echoed, with officials kickstarting the procession from the corresponding camps.
Heavy security measures underscore this year's yatra, with police and paramilitary forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, providing protection. Despite the challenges, the pilgrimage is set to conclude its 38-day course on August 9, maintaining its spiritual and cultural significance.
