In a significant legal victory for Wimbledon, London's High Court has ruled in favor of expanding the prestigious tennis grounds. The decision enables the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) to advance its £200 million project to significantly enlarge its facilities.
The justification for expansion, endorsed by the Greater London Authority (GLA), faced stiff opposition. Campaign group Save Wimbledon Park argued that the GLA had overlooked key restrictions on land redevelopment. However, Judge Pushpinder Saini dismissed these claims, citing legal compliance in granting planning permission.
Despite this ruling, Wimbledon's ambitions are not entirely unchallenged. A pivotal legal issue concerning the land's status is set to be addressed in early 2024, potentially posing further hurdles to the AELTC's expansion endeavors.
