Superstar Kamal Haasan, well-known for his acting prowess, has officially embarked on a new political chapter by taking the oath as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament on Friday. Delivering his oath in Tamil, Haasan received enthusiastic approval from fellow MPs, underscoring the significance of the moment.

The seasoned actor, known for his influential 'Thug Life' role, shared his enthusiasm over this political accomplishment. At 69, Haasan, who founded the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), conveyed a strong sense of pride and honor while speaking to the media outside the parliamentary premises.

This election to the Upper House is a landmark development in Haasan's political journey, marking his first foray into a national legislative role. Nominated through the support of the DMK-led alliance, which secured him the Rajya Sabha seat in exchange for MNM's backing during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Haasan took a significant step forward.

Haasan submitted his nomination on June 6 at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, with prominent figures like Chief Minister MK Stalin and DMK allies by his side. In the Tamil Nadu Assembly, 34 votes are required to secure a Rajya Sabha seat. The DMK-led INDIA bloc, with 158 MLAs, was in a strong position to claim four seats.

The MNM opted not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, instead allying with the DMK-led coalition. In the 2021 Assembly polls, MNM captured 2.62 percent of votes. Haasan, alongside five others, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu by June 12.

The elected members, including DMK's Poet Salma, SR Sivalingam, P Wilson, and AIADMK's IS Inbadurai and Dhanapal, received their certificates at the Chennai Secretariat. The Deputy Chief Minister and other MPs were in attendance during the certificate ceremony. (ANI)
