Dancing Through Life: Caracas Seniors Find New Rhythms at Club Tobias
Club Tobias in Caracas is a social hub for Venezuelans over 60, offering them a community amid familial and national diaspora. Founded to combat loneliness, the club organizes weekly dance meetups, bringing joy and connection to seniors like Angela Graterol and Juan Fuentes, despite their families' physical distances.

In a bustling mall in Caracas, the joyful sounds of music and laughter can be heard emanating from Club Tobias, a unique social club offering a lifeline to Venezuelans over 60. Many seniors have been left isolated as younger generations emigrated amid national economic struggles.
Club regular Angela Graterol, 93, praises the dancing sessions held every Thursday, saying they have revitalized her spirit. Despite three of her six children living abroad, Graterol finds joy in the music that seems to guide her feet. She is often joined by Juan Fuentes, a 90-year-old retired soldier whose daughter lives overseas. The club not only gives them a space to dance but also a place to feel connected.
With nearly 8 million citizens leaving Venezuela in recent years, the club addresses a pressing need for community among the estimated 3.5 million seniors left behind. Co-founded by Zandra Pedraza and Jose Rafael Quintana, Club Tobias has expanded to 15 locations, promoting the idea that a lively spirit knows no age. For many, it's more than a club; it's a reminder of the vibrant life they can still lead.
