A year has passed since the devastating landslide in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala region, and the hills are eerily quiet as hundreds gather to remember the lives lost. The atmosphere at Puthumala, where a common graveyard was created, is filled with sorrow as visitors silently pay their respects.
The landslide, triggered by heavy monsoon rains on July 29 and 30, 2024, claimed over 250 lives. Residents visit 'hridaya bhoomi', the final resting place for 264 victims in Meppadi panchayat, to honor the memories of their loved ones and reflect on the tragedy.
Manoj, a survivor, lost 26 family members. "This is a day we never want to remember, but the memories linger," he said. Despite the option for individual burials, many chose to let their loved ones be buried together, highlighting community unity in tragedy. A memorial meeting and all-faith prayer were held to mark the day.
