In an effort to enhance tourist safety, Goa's Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced on Thursday that the state government might ban glass liquor bottles near beaches. Responding to BJP MLA Michael Lobo's concerns about tourists getting injured, Sawant proposed replacing glass bottles with safer alternatives like cans.
Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte highlighted existing legislation allowing fines up to Rs 50,000 for littering. Khaunte emphasized these measures as essential, given the nuisance caused by broken glass on the shores. Discussions with Sawant led to contemplating stricter regulations.
Additionally, the state plans to notify a scheme where wine stores charge a refundable deposit fee on glass bottles. This initiative aims to incentivize returns and reduce litter, contributing to an improved coastal environment for all visitors.
