Call for Honoring Chittagong Heroes at Cellular Jail

There is no dedicated gallery at the Cellular Jail for the Chittagong Uprising. Despite displaying some freedom fighters' photos, an MP has asked for a separate gallery. Currently, the government has no plans for this. The uprising has historical ties to undivided Bengal, now part of Bangladesh.

In the heart of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a significant piece of history remains understated. The Cellular Jail, a stark reminder of India's struggle for independence, currently lacks a dedicated gallery for the legendary Chittagong Uprising, as revealed to Parliament by the government on Thursday.

Though the Freedom Fighter gallery houses images and information about 16 freedom fighters involved in the Chittagong case, including youthful activists unjustly imprisoned, Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat confirmed no plans are underway to create a separate display.

The demand for a dedicated gallery was raised by TMC MP Ritabrata Banerjee, spotlighting the need to honor these forgotten heroes of an uprising, once a pivotal part of undivided Bengal, now within the territory of Bangladesh.
