The relocation of Mahadevi, a 36-year-old elephant, has caused a stir in Maharashtra. The elephant was moved from Kolhapur to a welfare center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, following a court order addressing her health and well-being.
In Kolhapur, officials, including Maharashtra minister Prakash Abitkar and local MPs, are working to challenge the court's decision. Their efforts include coordinating with the central government to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court, aiming to bring Mahadevi back to the Jain monastery where she has resided since 1992.
The case has fueled local protests and widespread public demand for Mahadevi's return, with over 1.25 lakh people signing petitions. Concerns over her health conditions, including arthritis and psychological trauma due to prolonged captivity, prompted the original decision to move her to Gujarat for improved care.
