In a bid to mollify the impacts of wildlife intrusion, the Assam Forest Department has extended monetary compensation to 29 farmers from Mayong in Morigaon district. The encroachment of wild animals from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary led to significant crop damage.

Officials announced that each affected farmer would receive Rs 7,500, amounting to a total disbursement of Rs 2,17,500. The damage, primarily caused by rhinos, buffalos, and wild boars, affected maize, rice, and mustard crops. The dedicated team at Pobitora employed regional elephants and Anti-Depredation Squads to return wildlife to their habitats.

The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary covers 38.81 square kilometers and boasts the world's densest population of one-horned rhinoceroses. Despite being a sanctuary for rare species, the sanctuary's management has balanced conservation and community needs by effectively mitigating animal interference with local agriculture.
