The Chhattisgarh forest department has stirred controversy by recommending the diversion of 1742.60 hectares of forest land in the biodiversity-rich Hasdeo Arand belt. This land is intended for the Kente Extension Coal Block, allotted to Rajasthan government's power utility, RRVUNL, raising environmental and political concerns.
The decision has met strong opposition from the Congress party and environmental activists due to its potential impact on nearly 450,000 trees. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel criticized the BJP-led state government's approval, highlighting not only ecological but also cultural repercussions that the project may bring to the region.
Baghel argued that Rajasthan's coal needs for the next 15 years are already met by existing mines, questioning the necessity and legitimacy of further deforestation efforts. Activists emphasize the area's cultural significance, with proximity to archaeological sites and its role as a river catchment area threatened by deforestation.
