Clash Over Closure: Jain Community Defends Sacred Pigeon Feeding in Mumbai

Protesters on Wednesday dismantled the tarpaulin placed by the municipal corporation over a kabutarkhana, or pigeon feeding station, in Mumbai's Dadar area, following the Bombay High Court's directive to close such facilities due to health concerns.
Led predominantly by Jain community members, the protest turned confrontational when police intervened to halt their actions. Local guardian minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha criticized the disruption, reassuring that the police would address the issue appropriately, while urging the public to remain calm. He noted that the temple trust adjacent to the kabutarkhana denied involvement in the protest.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presided over a meeting to balance public health and the cultural significance of pigeon feeding, ensuring cleanliness and continued but regulated feeding practices. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been tasked with overseeing this transition.
