Geographical Indications (GI) have emerged as a vital tool for safeguarding India's rich cultural heritage while empowering artisan communities, according to Rajani Kant, a prominent advocate in the field.
Kant, renowned for his efforts in promoting GI tagging across the country, observed that over 650 applications have been submitted, resulting in 635 products receiving GI tags, including 36 from the Northeast and five from Meghalaya.
In a keynote address, Kant highlighted GI's role in linking traditional crafts with international markets and protecting indigenous knowledge systems, crucial for the survival of rural artisans, especially women and youth.
Sharing his journey from Mirzapur to international forums, Kant urged the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong, to actively engage in preserving local heritage in line with national initiatives. The institute is currently celebrating Handloom Week, featuring exhibitions and discussions to honor India's handloom legacy.
