Veteran poet, lyricist, and screenwriter Javed Akhtar paid homage to legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt during a centenary celebration event in Mumbai. Akhtar, now 80, shared his childhood aspirations of becoming a director under Dutt's tutelage, a dream thwarted by Dutt's passing just days after Akhtar moved to Mumbai in 1964.

The session showcased the profound influence Dutt's work had on prominent filmmakers including Sudhir Mishra and Hansal Mehta, all of whom praised Dutt's ability to convey complex narratives through visual storytelling. Despite never meeting his idol, Akhtar emphasized Dutt's lasting impact on his artistic vision.

Guru Dutt's cinematic genius continues to inspire directors today, evidenced by R Balki and Hansal Mehta's candid reflections on their creative journeys. Dutt's masterpieces, including 'Pyaasa' and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', are celebrated across India, as part of the retrospective activities orchestrated by the National Film Development Corporation.
