The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has officially unveiled a 10-foot high statue of "Maa Yamuna", strategically positioned along the riverbank near Nigam Bodh Ghat in North Delhi. This monumental representation of the river goddess is designed with a serene expression while gracefully seated on a tortoise, reflecting attributes of stability and endurance.
During the inauguration, Saxena emphasized the statue's cultural and spiritual importance, describing Yamuna as not just a river, but an integral part of regional heritage. "This idol celebrates the sacred bond between humans and nature, urging the protection of Yamuna's sanctity for future generations," he stated. Once a neglected and encroached-upon site, the spot now serves as a revitalized public space with the statue, aimed at offering recreational benefits to the community.
Efforts to engage the public include linking the statue to Vasudev Ghat via a cycle track and walkway, complemented by park developments like Banseera and Amrit Bio-diversity Park along the riverbanks. This initiative aims not only to preserve the cultural essence of the river but also to reclaim floodplain areas for public use. The DDA also plans to enhance the visitors' experience by opening refreshment kiosks, further enriching the site.
