The Czech Film and Television Academy has announced that Klara Tasovska's documentary, 'I'm Not Everything I Want to Be,' will be the nation's submission for Best International Feature at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
'I'm Not Everything I Want to Be,' co-written, co-produced, and directed by Tasovska, premiered in February 2024 at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. The documentary was also featured in the International Competition at Montreal's 2024 Festival du nouveau cinema, earning accolades such as the Daniel Langlois Innovation Award and the Fierte Montreal award for its LGBTQ-related themes.
The film delves into the life and career of Czech photographer Libuse Jarcovjakova, renowned for capturing Prague's underground LGBTQ scene prior to the legalization of homosexuality. This marks the first time the Czech Academy selected its Oscar entry through a two-round process, where 'I'm Not Everything I Want to Be' triumphed over competitors 'Broken Voices' and 'Caravan,' garnering the votes of 194 eligible academy members. Last year's Czech submission, 'Waves,' reached the Oscar shortlist but missed out on a nomination. The Czech Republic's history in the category includes three wins, notably 'Kolya' and 'The Shop on Main Street.' The international feature shortlist will be announced on December 16, with nominations following on January 22 ahead of the Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles on March 15, 2024.
