Women in Film (WIF) India, in partnership with the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting's WAVES Film Bazaar, has announced its initiative to select six projects by Indian filmmakers for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025. Each project must feature at least one woman in a key creative role, reflecting the mission of WIF India under the leadership of renowned producer Guneet Monga Kapoor. This campaign aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for women's empowerment. Indian filmmakers are encouraged to submit entries via the official WIF India website for consideration in the WAVES Bazaar Showcase at TIFF 50.
Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, the #WIFIndiaAtTIFF initiative aims to spotlight emerging women storytellers at a major international platform. An expert jury, including some of the industry's top filmmakers, will handpick the selections based on submitted entries. Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, emphasized the importance of diversity in Indian cinema, stating, "Indian cinema, a powerful cultural ambassador, needs to showcase its diversity on a global stage." He highlighted the initiative's goal to ensure Indian women filmmakers gain access and recognition internationally.
Guneet Monga Kapoor, Oscar-winning producer and founder of WIF India, stated, "This is more than a delegation; it's a declaration: Indian women in film are ready to take the global stage." She emphasized the program's commitment to providing selected filmmakers with immersive incubation experiences and extensive exposure at TIFF. The initiative seeks projects in various stages, offering mentorship, networking opportunities, festival accreditation, travel, and accommodation benefits. The final selection of six projects will be announced post-August 20, 2025, with delegates attending TIFF 2025 from September 4 to 14, 2025.
