For the fourth year running, Kerala's renowned handloom weavers have crafted unique gifts for India's top leaders in celebration of Onam. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and other senior figures will receive traditional attire from Peringamala, a village famed for its age-old weaving heritage.
This prestigious order was secured through Hantex, Kerala's state-run handloom agency. Over 24 days, 28 skilled artisans from the Jaikish Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society meticulously completed these masterpieces. Notable pieces include 15 royal shawls, 15 royal sarees, and 110 other shawls, all woven with golden threads.
These handloom creations, steeped in tradition, amplify the cultural significance of Kerala's weaving industry, which once supplied the Travancore royal family. Although the industry faces challenges, initiatives like sourcing fabric for school uniforms provide crucial support, preserving the rich legacy of Balaramapuram's weaving artisans.
