A new study reveals how Indians in Singapore perceive their identity, highlighting the significance of nationality, race, and language. Nationality was deemed the most crucial identity marker, particularly distinguishing Indian and Malay minorities from their Chinese counterparts.

The research, part of the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Survey on Race, Religion, and Language 2024, emphasizes the integral role of language and national identity for Indians. Notably, 50.1% of Indian respondents described being Singaporean as very important, compared to 37.8% of Chinese respondents.

These insights underscore the multicultural fabric of Singapore and suggest a need for national policies that respect and nurture cultural diversity while promoting a unified national identity, as highlighted by the authors of the study.
