Nagaland's Green Gold: Bamboo Fuels Sustainable Growth and Innovation
Nagaland is harnessing its bamboo resources for sustainable development. Led by Kuko Mero of the NBDA, efforts include plantations, training, and employment initiatives to make bamboo a key economic driver. The state is also celebrating World Bamboo Day 2025 with new projects and awards to promote innovation.

Nagaland holds significant potential for sustainable development through its vast bamboo resources, according to Kuko Mero, State Mission Director of the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA).
During World Bamboo Day 2025 celebrations at the Nagaland Bamboo Resource Centre, Sovima, Mero highlighted several initiatives by the NBDA. These include bamboo block plantations spanning 1,506 hectares, training programs for more than 200 entrepreneurs and artisans, and setting up two Common Facility Centres providing employment for over 500 people.
Initiatives such as establishing processing units, nurseries, rural haats, and upgrading Nagaland Handicrafts Emporium under the 'Naturally Nagaland' brand are further aimed at utilizing bamboo for livelihood, innovation, and climate resilience. Development Commissioner Temsunaro Aier called bamboo Nagaland's 'green gold', advocating for sustainable practices and announcing new projects like the Cane and Bamboo Technology Park.
