The World Teak Conference, which wrapped up on Friday, outlined nine crucial recommendations aimed at fostering sustainable teak production and enhancing trade avenues, according to the organisers.
The international event, hosted by the International Tropical Timber Organisation, TEAKNET, and Kerala Forest Research Institute, attracted over 300 delegates from 40 countries, including experts and industry representatives.
Key recommendations include endorsing mixed-cropping plantations over traditional methods, encouraging research for stronger agroforestry systems, adopting environmentally friendly phytosanitary measures for imported wood, and leveraging artificial intelligence for effective surveys and monitoring. The conference also emphasized boosting clonal plantations, addressing smallholder farmers' challenges, providing localized training on teak management, linking plantations to carbon markets, and enhancing investment in research and development.
