Legendary Singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Passes Away at 87

Legendary Indian classical singer Pandit Chhannulal Mishra passed away on Thursday morning, as confirmed by his daughter Namrata Mishra. The esteemed musician breathed his last at her residence in Mirzapur following a prolonged illness. His funeral will be conducted with full state honors at Manikarnika Ghat later that evening.

Namrata revealed that her father had battled significant health issues, facing hospitalization at several facilities, including an extended stay in the ICU at BHU. Doctors had expressed concerns over his declining condition, citing age-related complications. Ultimately, they advised bringing him home for comfort and care.

The maestro's body will initially be taken to their ancestral home, and his son has already left for Varanasi to attend the final rites. Despite family disputes adding strain, Namrata admired her father's unwavering dedication to music and noted his teachings and routines that were inspirational for those around him.

The state, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has extended its support to Mishra's family. Union Home Minister Amit Shah regularly engaged with Mishra, reflecting his national stature in music. Officials and the community have echoed this admiration, praising his unparalleled contribution to the Banaras gharana tradition.

In his illustrious career, Mishra received accolades such as the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards, reflecting his remarkable influence in the realm of Hindustani classical music. His legacy endures through his contributions and the lineage of musicians and enthusiasts he inspired.
