The Karnataka High Court has maintained its stay on the Rs 200 ceiling for cinema ticket prices across multiple theaters in the state, aiming to strike a balance between consumer rights and business interests.

In an official statement by the Department of Information and Public Relations, the court ruled in favor of the Karnataka State Film Chamber of Commerce against the Multiplex Association of India, keeping the stay granted on September 23 and introducing guidelines for ticket management and refunds in its September 30 order.

The court directed multiplexes to keep thorough and auditable records for each ticket sale, covering details such as sale time, booking method, payment type, and the total amount. If petitioners succeed in their case, electronic payment refunds excluding GST are mandated, with a plan for implementation required in 45 days, which will also be vetted by the High Court.
