IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with a Maharashtra-based company, has pioneered a novel way to combat pollution by developing eco-friendly tableware from wheat straw. This innovation tackles the dual challenges of stubble burning and the increasing environmental impact of single-use plastics.
The product, crafted by molding wheat straw, is not only naturally degradable and compostable but also offers a heat-resistant and food-safe alternative to traditional plastics. It aligns with the 'soil to soil' philosophy, ensuring that it can return to the earth without environmental harm.
Professor Vibhor K Rastogi led the research at the Institute's InnoPap laboratory, showcasing how agricultural residues can transform into high-quality, sustainable products. This initiative emphasizes the potential of science and engineering to develop sustainable solutions, integrating into strategies like the Swachh Bharat Mission and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
