India and Suriname: A Diplomatic and Cultural Milestone

India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, has described the nation's relationship with Suriname as akin to 'family' as the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic ties. In an article for the Times of Suriname, Jaishankar highlighted the expansion into a robust, multifaceted engagement.

Both nations have collaborated on infrastructure, trade, and cultural links, strengthened by high-level exchanges and mutual visits. Indian-backed projects in Suriname include electrical transmission lines, food security aid, and the establishment of a passion fruit processing plant, aiming to boost local agriculture and self-sufficiency.

At the international stage, the countries share similar views on UN reform and actively participate in initiatives like the International Solar and Big Cat Alliances. Despite geographical distance, they share historical ties, with Indian cultural influences remaining strong in Suriname.
