Supreme Court Upholds Heritage Preservation of Mysuru Landmarks

The Supreme Court has mandated the preservation of Mysuru's iconic Devaraja Market and Lansdowne Building, emphasizing their historical significance. These structures, dating back to the 1880s, received judicial protection following a detailed report from IIT Roorkee.
On May 4, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi supported the findings that both buildings can be restored and conserved. Their decision overturns a prior Karnataka High Court ruling that permitted potential demolition, accentuating the architectural and civic importance of these landmarks.
The court ordered the Mysuru City Corporation and the Mysuru Urban Development Authority to develop a comprehensive restoration plan. Further steps should align with the insightful recommendations from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), aiming for completion before further deterioration occurs.
