Amid escalating tensions in the region, stemming from recent military actions and border security concerns, the East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya has implemented a night curfew. Effective from May 8, 2025, this curfew restricts movement within a one-kilometer radius along the India-Bangladesh border, operational daily from 8 PM to 6 AM, as outlined by District Magistrate R.M. Kurbah.
The curfew aims to curb unauthorized crossings and potential unlawful assemblies near the border, targeting illegal activities including smuggling of goods like betelnut, dry fish, and cigarettes. These measures are seen as crucial in addressing security challenges following the 'Operation Sindoor,' a mission by Indian Armed Forces against terror sites in Pakistan in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack.
In response, Bangladesh has expressed its concern over the deteriorating situation, advocating for peaceful diplomatic efforts. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry has emphasized the importance of regional stability, urging India and Pakistan to exercise restraint. Amid these developments, security experts around the Indo-Bangladesh border zone remain vigilant, wary of further escalations.
