The annual 61-day fishing ban imposed by the Tamil Nadu government has concluded, marking the return of Thoothukudi fishermen to the sea in mechanized boats. Instituted on April 15, the ban is designed to coincide with the monsoon season, to safeguard fish during crucial breeding periods along the Indian coast.

The ban encompasses the Bay of Bengal, Palk Bay, and the Gulf of Mannar, forming part of an official strategy to conserve marine resources while boosting fisheries. By temporarily halting fishing activities, the ban ensures the replenishment of fish stocks, allowing time for fish spawning and growth, which enhances the fishing industry's sustainability.

While fishermen face immediate economic challenges due to the ban, the prospective long-term benefits include improved marine ecosystem health, bolstered biodiversity, and a steady income for future generations. Nonetheless, the restriction significantly impacts local communities, particularly amid economic losses and limitations imposed by the Sri Lankan Navy.

As fishing families are deprived of traditional fishing grounds and income, the state government has provided Rs 8,000 as relief per family during the ban. However, fishermen have called for an increase in relief to Rs 15,000, citing increases in living expenses and economic pressures.
