The Assam Regiment marked its 84th Raising Day with a solemn ceremony at the War Memorial located at Babupara Traffic Point in Imphal. Established on June 15, 1941, in Shillong, the regiment was crucial in countering the Japanese invasion of India during World War II.
The regiment reflects the rich martial heritage of North East India, recruiting from the Hill Tribes, including Meiteis, Nagas, Kukis, Mizos, Assamese, and Gorkhas. Under the leadership of Lt Col Ross Howman, the 1st Battalion gained distinction in the Burma Campaign, earning multiple battle honors and the Theatre Honour 'Burma'.
The 165th Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Assam organized the event, attended by army veterans and serving members. The Deputy Inspector General of Assam Rifles (S) and other officials were present. Concurrently, Assam Rifles highlighted their operational readiness with firing exercises at Darranga Field Firing Range.
