The Indian government's push to expand national waterways has resulted in a dramatic rise from five to 111 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, according to Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. During a recent event in Patna, Sonowal emphasized that 29 of these waterways are now operational, aiding economic growth in various states.
Sonowal highlighted the benefits brought about by this initiative, particularly to farmers, youth, and small traders. Under Modi's tenure, the transformation in the waterways sector has fortified local economies across India.
The Union Minister also detailed plans for the development of Patna as a major waterways hub, responding to appeals from the Bihar government. A task force will be set up to plan infrastructure projects, including the introduction of electric ferries and river cruises, offering a boost to local tourism and culture along the Ganga River.
