BJP MP Arvind Dharmapuri has cast a critical eye on Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy's proposed meeting regarding the Banakacherla project. Dharmapuri pointed out a significant communication gap between the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, contributing to escalating tensions over the project.
According to Dharmapuri, the Banakacherla project is an initiative by the Andhra Pradesh government, with no substantial documentation yet presented to the Centre. He emphasized that the central government would adhere to Central Water Commission guidelines and Godavari River Board regulations. He dismissed Reddy's meeting as futile and alleged it was influenced by higher political orders.
Additionally, BRS MLC K Kavitha fiercely voiced concerns over the proposed Godavari-Cauvery river linking, fearing it would strip Telangana of its water entitlements, leaving numerous districts at risk. Kavitha also criticized Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for failing to block central decisions adversely affecting Telangana's water security.
Both Dharmapuri and Kavitha have indicated opposition from Telangana against the shifting of the linkage point from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh. The Godavari-Banakacherla Link Scheme is a substantial project proposed by Andhra Pradesh, estimated at Rs 80,112 crore. It involves diverting significant water resources from the Godavari River.
In response, Telangana has resolved to take the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging the contentious Godavari-Banakacherla Link Scheme and the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme (RLIS). This legal move underscores the growing discord between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over water resources.
