By-elections are currently taking place in five constituencies across India, featuring prominent political battles, including the key Ludhiana West seat in Punjab. Among the significant contenders are Congress' Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who voted early on and encouraged the public to fulfill their civic duties.
The Ludhiana West seat became available following the passing of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. In response, the BJP has nominated Jiwan Gupta, while AAP has elected Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora and Shiromani Akali Dal has named Parupkar Singh Ghumman as its candidate.
In addition to Punjab, four other constituencies are participating: Nilambur in Kerala, Kaliganj in West Bengal, and Visavadar and Kadi in Gujarat. Notably, the Nilambur contest is viewed as a precursor to the 2026 Assembly elections, with the UDF and LDF locking horns. The polls' outcomes, due on June 23, could significantly alter the political landscape.
