In a significant move towards energy independence, Assam's electricity demand has surged by an impressive 11% annually over the past four years. This growth trajectory is primarily driven by infrastructural expansion, industrialization, and an improving standard of living. Projections reveal that this growing demand could lead the state's daily electricity requirement to reach a whopping 5,500 megawatts by 2035. Responding to this, the Assam State Government is undertaking strategic initiatives to ensure self-reliance in electricity production by the forecasted year.
The importance of this initiative was highlighted by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during the release of "THIRD AMPERE," a publication detailing the evolution of Assam's power sector. The event was not only a celebration of the silver jubilee of the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission (AERC) but also a testament to the state's commitment to power sector reform. During the event, Dr. Sarma introduced five new regulatory frameworks, emphasizing that electricity plays a pivotal role in regional development, with current state generation standing at approximately 500 megawatts. The recent peak summer demand has surged to 2,700 megawatts, with predictions of reaching 2,900 megawatts by September.
Additionally, at the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, substantial investment proposals totaling Rs. 5 lakh crores have been secured, with significant portions allocated to the industrial and infrastructure sectors. These developments are poised to further escalate Assam's electricity needs. Highlighting the state's commitment to future readiness, Dr. Sarma discussed the government's long-term energy strategy, including plans to generate 5,000 megawatts of solar power and the establishment of a 3,000-megawatt thermal power project approved by the Union Ministry of Power. The state has also undertaken measures to enhance sector efficiency, cut power transmission losses, and introduce smart meters, leading to reduced electricity tariffs.
