In a significant move to bolster India's parliamentary diplomacy, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla revealed plans to establish Parliamentary Friendship Groups aimed at fostering better links with global parliaments.
Speaking at the National Conference of Estimates Committees, Birla stated that these groups, designed to enhance international relations, would officially launch following consultations with all political parties during the upcoming Monsoon Session. Birla highlighted that such friendship groups have historically been effective in building mutual understanding and cooperation among nations.
These groups will include Members of Parliament from various parties, facilitating direct engagement with foreign counterparts to share best practices and deepen bilateral ties. This initiative opens new channels for collaboration in trade, education, culture, and technology, emphasizing India's focus on diplomacy beyond traditional executive methods.
Previously, the government deployed all-party delegations abroad to present a united front against terrorism post-Operation Sindoor, showcasing India's national consensus on key issues. Received positively, this strategy encouraged the formation of friendship groups to further global relationships.
Birla expressed optimism that consensus among parties could make the Parliamentary Friendship Groups a cornerstone of India's soft power strategy, boosting international engagement through legislative avenues.
