In a significant move to enhance aviation safety, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has uncovered major safety oversights at prominent Indian airports, such as Mumbai and Delhi, during a recent surveillance operation. The aviation authority has mandated that concerned operators implement corrective measures within a week to address these critical issues.

The comprehensive DGCA assessment revealed several deficiencies in airport operations, including ineffective monitoring, inadequate defect rectifications, and unsecured equipment. Conducted by dual teams under the Joint Director General's leadership, the surveillance targeted essential aviation segments such as flight operations, air traffic control, and ground handling, primarily during the night and early morning hours.

Key failures identified included the recurrence of defects in aircraft systems, unserviceable ground handling equipment, and neglect of crucial safety practices by Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs). The DGCA also highlighted outdated runway markings, improper lighting on taxiways, and unauthorized vehicles operating on the airfield as areas in dire need of improvement. Moving forward, DGCA plans to sustain its rigorous scrutiny to pre-emptively address safety hazards in India's aviation landscape.
