The alleged gang rape of a law student within her college premises in Kolkata has sparked widespread outrage and intense political discourse regarding the safety of women in educational institutions. Reacting to the public's growing anger, Congress MP Imran Masood has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decision to set up a probe committee, deeming it unnecessary. He emphasized that the matter should be handled by law enforcement without political intervention, insisting on swift justice for the victim.
Masood stated, 'It is the job of the police. The law of the country is capable of punishing the culprits. Strict action should be taken, and this should not be politicized. The victim deserves justice.' Meanwhile, the West Bengal government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee are under fire, as public backlash grows, compounded by the recent RG Kar Medical College rape case. The victim's advocate, Arindam Kanjilal, has advocated for harsh punishment, not less than 20 years, escalating to life imprisonment.
Kanjilal commended the swift arrests by the Bengal police and expressed confidence in their ability to handle the investigation, dismissing the need for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) involvement. The incident, labeled 'unfortunate' by the advocate who personally knows the victim, has incited demands for accountability from BJP leader Gourav Vallabh, who called for the immediate resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee amid growing accusations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of shielding the accused.
