In response to escalating water levels in the Chenab River following heavy rainfall, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district have opened three gates of the Baglihar Dam, officials stated on Monday. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), working alongside local administrations, has issued warnings concerning the growing water levels.

As a precautionary measure, river rafting activities have been suspended. Residents in low-lying areas, including Talwada, Kansi Patta, Thanpal, Chinka, Gujrkothi, and Jendi, remain on high alert. Administrative authorities have increased patrolling efforts and advised the public to avoid riverbanks, ensuring livestock are relocated to safer areas.

Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shridhar Patil emphasized the significance of staying clear from rivers and overflowing streams. The event occurs amid intricate geopolitical undercurrents, as last month, the Salal Dam gates were tightly controlled following India-Pakistan tensions after a Pahalgam terror attack. India momentarily placed the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader strategy announced under "Operation Sindoor."
