The Indian Navy has expanded its fleet with the addition of Yard 12652 (Udaygiri), marking the second installment of the Project 17A stealth frigate series. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL) delivered the vessel, which signifies a significant advancement over the preceding Shivalik class (Project 17) frigates currently in service.
Udaygiri, the second of seven P17A frigates under construction at MDSL, Mumbai, and GRSE, Kolkata, boasts modern features and capabilities apt for 'Blue Water' missions, capable of addressing both conventional and non-conventional threats pertinent to India's maritime interests.
The Defence Ministry praised the Project 17A ships as a testament to the Indian Navy's prowess in naval design, underscoring the efforts in 'Integrated Construction' to expedite the building process. With 4.54% larger hulls, these ships are equipped with cutting-edge weapons and sensor suites, enhancing their stealth and operational effectiveness.
