Mayawati Slams Central Government Over 'Anti-Public' Railway Fare Hike

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati has voiced strong opposition to the Central Government's recent decision to hike railway fares, labeling the move as contrary to public welfare and an indication of a commercial mindset overshadowing welfare objectives.

Highlighting the plight of the majority, she emphasized that for many Indians, train travel is a necessity, not luxury. With the new pricing set to burden those already grappling with inflation and poverty, Mayawati called for a reconsideration of the policy.

The fare adjustments, starting July 1, 2025, involve marginal increases based on travel distance and class, sparing suburban services. The Ministry of Railways promises smooth implementation, with no changes to ancillary charges, ensuring existing tickets remain unaffected. Meanwhile, Mayawati continues to urge the government to prioritize citizens' financial struggles over revenue enhancement.
