In a decisive crackdown, Assam police have apprehended 205 individuals as part of a statewide operation targeting illegal beef trade establishments in violation of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. The initiative, starting July 1, saw raids on 191 hotels, restaurants, and slaughterhouses, according to official reports.
Inspector General of Police for Law and Order, Akhilesh Kumar Singh, confirmed the arrests and detailed that 1974 kg of beef was seized during the raids. The act, which prohibits the slaughter and sale of beef in areas dominated by Hindu, Jain, Sikh, and other non-beef-eating communities or within 5 km of a Hindu place of worship, was strongly enforced.
Adhering to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directives, the police targeted districts such as Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Dhubri, and Goalpara. This crackdown is part of a broader effort to maintain communal harmony, with further actions planned to reinforce the act's 5 km restriction and surveying of sensitive areas to prevent future violations.
