IIT Guwahati Student Named Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador
Sukanya Sonowal, a B.Tech student from IIT Guwahati, has been appointed Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador. Selected for the 2025-2027 term, she will lead the Communications & Public Relations division. Her extensive experience in peacebuilding, communications, and international collaboration contributed to her appointment, marking a significant achievement for the institution.

Sukanya Sonowal, a fourth-year B.Tech student in Biosciences and Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, has been selected as a Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador. She will serve on the Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassadors Network (CYPAN) Executive Committee, representing the prestigious leadership role for the 2025-2027 term.
Sonowal will assume the position of Lead - Communications & Public Relations, where she will focus on fostering dialogue and understanding among the 56 member nations of the Commonwealth. The selection process was rigorous, involving three stages, including an application and two interview rounds, assessing her commitment to peacebuilding and community service.
A native of Assam's Lakhimpur district, Sonowal's experience in communications was instrumental in her selection. She co-founded STEMvibe, engaged over 3,000 students nationwide, and she spearheaded a national-level mathematics competition that drew over 2,500 participants, showcasing her capability to manage large-scale communication campaigns and build international collaborations.
