PETA India has made a vehement appeal to the Maharashtra government to enforce a ban on breeding, selling, and keeping specific foreign dog breeds, which they claim are bred for illegal fighting and aggression. The plea follows a harrowing incident where a man allegedly commanded his pit bull to attack an 11-year-old boy in Mumbai, garnering widespread social media outrage.

In a letter addressed to Dr. K H Govindraj of the Urban Development Department, PETA India highlighted that breeds like Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, and others have histories of aggression and are often sold to unsuspecting owners who struggle to control them. The organization cited multiple attacks in Maharashtra this year to underscore the urgency of their request.

Advocacy Associate Shaurya Agrawal emphasized the risk these breeds pose as they are used in illegal dogfights. PETA India called for stringent measures, including the mandatory sterilization and registration of such dogs, and urged the closure of illegal pet shops and breeders to curb these dangerous practices.
